Keith Haring Larry Levan Record Art (1986/2009): This historic & much sought after, rare vinyl record album c.2009 features Keith Haring cover art derived from the 1986 illustrations Haring constructed on occasion of Larry Levan’s birthday at Paradise Garage. Record includes the extended live finale of Paradise Garage by the late great DJ Larry Levan. A fantastic frame piece & testament to Haring’s connection to New York City dance culture. Off-Set lithograph. 2009. 12 x 12 inches (30.48 x 30.48 cm). Good to very good overall vintage condition. Includes the original album in good overall vintage condition. Looks very cool framed. Further Background: Larry Levan was an American DJ best known for his decade-long residency at the legendary New York City nightclub Paradise Garage, the prototype of the modern dance club. Levan developed a cult following who referred to his sets as "Saturday Mass". Influential post-disco DJ François Kevorkian credits Levan with introducing the dub aesthetic into dance music. Levan experimented with drum machines and synthesizers in his productions and live sets, ushering in an electronic, post-disco sound that presaged the ascendence of house music. When Keith Haring was introduced to Levan/Paradise Garage, he said, “it absolutely blew my mind … I mean, I have never been the same since I walked into Paradise Garage”. From that point on Haring was also regularly attending parties there, sometimes even scheduling his trips around the Garage’s program. In his journal, he is describing “leaving on Sundays and returning on Saturdays”. In fact, together with Levan, he was one of the main promoters of the Paradise Garage. As one of the first multimedia dance clubs, Paradise Garage was a place that Haring himself declared played a crucial role in his development and socialization, at least up until 1987. In his journals he wrote, “I don’t know if you know how important the Paradise Garage is, at least for me and the tribe of people who have shared many a collective spiritual experience there. The Garage also changed or affected my life incredibly through various ‘re-imprinting’ experiences and transformations.” He also describes how the scene at the Garage inspired the succession of dancing figures with which he plastered the City in the early 80’s. “Keith was a product of the whole street vibe. Paradise Garage was four walls to put the street in. He was about what the street was. What percolated on the street was what Keith was about.” (DJ Junior Vasquez)

Unframed As a consequence of the prolonged strike by the Royal Mail postal workers in the United Kingdom, Allen Jones, along with a group of top British Pop artists of the era including David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Derek Boshier, the poet/activist Christopher Logue and Richard Hamilton, published ''Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art''to raise funds for the striking workers. The "stamps" were published in a limited edition of only 250 each (some artists, like Paolozzi and Allen Jones created more than one design), with the artists signing each by hand in blue ink with his initials on the lower right. Allen Jones "Mail Order" is an especially clever take on the project; it is at once a postage stamp (hence the title "Mail Order"), but it also refers to the popular mail order catalogues of the era. It was a particular preoccupation of Jones, who, separately, created a large lithograph called "Janet is Wearing" -- referring to his wife Janet, but playing upon the advertising jargon of the day, used in mail order catalogues.
